Botanical Garden of Vilnius university was founded in 1781 by Professor J. E. Gilibert (1741-1814). The Garden occupied an area of 300 sq. m and contained about 2000 species of plants from various countries of the world. Later by the efforts of famous naturalist G. A. Forster (1754-1794) another tract of land was acquired for the Botanical Garden. For many years the Garden was supervised by Professor S. B. Jundzill (1761-1847). In 1824 the collections of the Garden contained as many as 6565 species. In 1832, when the University was closed down, the introduced plants perished and the Botanical Garden became simply into a park. In 1919, a new Botanical Garden was started in Vingis Park located in the valley of the Neris River in the western part of Vilnius. At present, it is the home of the Department of Plant Systematic and Geography. The Botanical Garden itself was moved to a new location in the village of Kairenai, in the north-east of Vilnius, in 1974, just before the 400 anniversary of Vilnius University. It occupies a territory of 199 hectares.
