The arboretum comprises the 155 acres that make up Georgian Court University's Lakewood campus. Half of the acreage is cultivated landscape. The campus is the former George Jay Gould estate, dating from 1900, and is a National Historic Landmark. The estate was designed by Bruce Price, who also designed 3 of the 4 historic gardens (Italian, Formal and Sunken). The fourth garden is a Japanese Garden designed by Takeo Shiota, dating from about 1910. The arboretum features a number of trees planted in the early 1900s and has collections of conifers, oaks, maples and hollies. The aboretum also has all of the major tree species native to the New Jersey Pinelands (Pine Barrens), in which the arboretum is located. The grounds feature a number of sculptures, statues, and fountains, some of which date are European and date from the 17th century.
