The background of Iranian Medical History came back to ancient times. The oldest Iranian Medical Education Center was established in the 3rd century at Gondi Shapour University, the famous university of that time.
The Iran National Museum of Medical Science History displays relevant tools of pre-history up to contemporary time as the historical process of medical sciences in Iran. It encompasses the following sections: ancient ethnology, anthropology, handwritten notes & documents, veterinary science history, ophthalmology history, dentistry history, pharmaceutics history & pharmaceutical herbs.
One of the important objects of Iranian Medicine History is the 5000 BC skull of a 13 year old girl, found in Southestern Iran (Shahr-i sokhta Zabol). It shows the first surgery procedures with complete knowledge of disease and treatment methods. Another important item is a book under the title of Tebbe Mansouri, written by Razi. Razi was the discoverer of alcohol and the first to present different guidelines for eye diseases. The book is about clinical medicine and the oldest version known in the world. The oldest tools and instruments at ophthalmology department belonged to the first Iranian modern ophthalmologist, who made eyeglasses in Iran for the first time.
