The Goldstein Museum of Design (GMD) at the University of Minnesota is an educational and cultural institution that advances the understanding and appreciation of design and cultivates an awareness that designed objects can contribute to quality of life through effective solutions to human challenges and aesthetic satisfaction.Founded in 1976, GMD’s emphasis on design that touches people’s lives is based on the teaching and collections of Harriet and Vetta Goldstein, professors in the University’s Design Department from 1910 to the late 1940’s. GMD is part of the College of Design and serves as an essential resource for object-based teaching and learning. The museum’s collection contains approximately 30,000 objects that include apparel and accessories (22,000 items), textiles (5,000 items), applied arts/product design (2,500 items), and graphic design/works on paper (660 items). The collection is studied in the Research Center by classes and scholars and by a wide range of community members from collectors to theatrical costumers. Items are also lent to museums nationally for exhibitions.
