At Uppsala University - the oldest university in Sweden, founded in 1477, Gustavianum is the main university museum with vast collections of art, archaeology (Classic, Nordic and Egyptian), science history and coins. Situated in the medieval heart of the city, Gustavianum's exhibitions are housed in the former main building of Uppsala University. Attracting over 85.000 paying visitors every year, the museum remains the top museum in Uppsala. The building also houses an architectural gem: an anatomical theatre from 1663 which has been painstakingly restored.
The museum also has two centrally located Open Collections Archives. These are open daily to all students and researchers that have a university affiliation somewhere in the world. Coins and art are housed in the main University Building, across the park from Gustavianum; archaeology and science history at Villavägen, a 10-minute walk through the Botanical Garden.
Gustavianum has been Uppsala's main university museum since 1997. In 2015 its mission was revised Today Gustavianum is tasked with:
* keeping the public museum open to the general public, acting as an interface between academia and the rest of the world
* making all collections available as an resource for teaching and research
* being a resource for Uppsala University students in their studies and future employability
